From Porto Tolle to Ravenna, Comacchio and Ferrara: day trips from the Po Delta
Porto Tolle lies on the Romea, the SS309 road connecting Venice and Ravenna. Using the Po Delta as a base lets you alternate nature and waterscapes with days devoted to nearby historic towns and cities of art.
Ravenna and its Byzantine mosaics
Ravenna is about 90 kilometres from Porto Tolle, roughly an hour and a half by car. It makes a day trip centred above all on its Byzantine mosaics, before returning towards the Delta.
Comacchio, canals and wetlands
Continuing south along the same road brings you to Comacchio, a small town shaped by canals and connected to its wetlands. It extends the story of land and water that begins in the Po Delta.
Ferrara, the Este city
Ferrara can be reached by car for a day visit. Its historic centre offers the urban landscape of the Este city before the evening return to Porto Tolle.
Adria and the origins of the Adriatic
A short distance away is Adria, the Etruscan and Greek city that gave its name to the Adriatic Sea. A visit can include the National Archaeological Museum and add a historical stop to a stay in the Delta.
Back to the Delta in the evening
After the trip, return to Porto Tolle for dinner at RistòItalia and a night at Albergo Italia: one steady base from which to set out for a different destination each day.
