Porto Tolle is the village where the Po Delta really begins: lagoons, embankments, bays and river mouths start a few minutes from its streets. How far is the Delta
In the Delta, distances are measured in minutes along the embankments rather than motorway kilometres. From the hotel you can reach Sacca degli Scardovari, with its rows of poles for mussel and clam farming, the harbour and fish market of Pila, where the catch is unloaded in the morning, and the river mouths with their sandbanks. They all lie a few minutes away by car, and many can be reached by bike along the embankments: the "Where we are" section at the bottom of this page shows them on the map with driving directions.
This is why Porto Tolle works well as a base for several days: one day by boat towards the mouths, one day cycling along the embankments, one day among fishing hamlets and floodplains — always coming back to the same room, without repacking.
When to come
Spring brings blossom on the floodplains and migrating birds; summer means long evenings, village festivals and tables outdoors; autumn brings Delta rice, shellfish and the low light photographers look for. Winter is the quietest season: mist over the canals, few visitors and flamingos standing in shallow water.
